Predicted results of £2.23 billion for end of 2008
The chocolate market in the UK is set to grow by 5 per cent in 2008, resulting in over £2.23 billion sales by the end of this year.
Dark chocolate is expected to rise by a further 17 per cent over the next 5 years due to its healthier image. Mathilde Dudouit, senior market analyst at Mintel, said, "Dark chocolate now has the reputation as being a healthier alternative to other chocolate and this has really struck a chord with Britain's chocoholics."
The luxury chocolate market has also rose. Sales increased to £140 million in 2007, and this trend is predicted to continue. Dudouit said: "Brits may not be eating chocolate as often as they used to, but they are certainly splashing out more on premium varieties. The trick today is to eat less, but to go all out when indulging so that it really is a luxurious treat.”
