Who's expanding?
The food and drink sector is the UK’s biggest employer, accounting for more than 3.5 million staff – 12 per cent of jobs for the country. This has resulted in over 6500 companies bringing in an annual turnover of £66bn (based on research done in 2005 by the Food and Drink Federation).
Currently the sector is doing well, though there are particular areas within expansion is occurring. “In general, the soft drinks sector is just about holding its own and is neither expanding nor contracting” said Neville Sheldranke, capital projects manager for the UK at Coca-Cola “However water and juices are a real growth industry".
In addition to this, the wines, beers and spirits sector is another area where jobs are being created. This includes drinks manufacturer, Diageo, owner of brands including Guiness and Bells. Currently operating at more than 50 sites, most located in the north of England, there is becoming the increasing opportunity for Diageo to expand.
